My prediction of the future; it came in a dream

It is the middle of the 21st Century, and the world is split in twain.

Against all predictions the rise of informational technology did not automate the ‘menial’ jobs of the day, instead it took out the middle. The robot does not clean and dust, but instead checks payroll and transcribes from dictation.

With this centre removed, we are left with two ever diverging worlds. One world of manual, tangible tasks, the other ever more cerebral. The increasingly globalised mono-culture of one, and the intensely national locale of the other.

The Global World

The global world is, well, global. Bands in South Korea find their most devoted followers in the States. Greek socio-economic thinkers find their ideas becoming public policy in Chile. It is perfectly accepted to live in the UK and apply for a job in India without any expectation of ever visiting that office. Fashions, both workplace and in global cities continue to unify. The teenager in London will be wearing the same shoe as the teenager in Tokyo. Production lines are digitised so items are manufactured within the country the customer ordered, thus entire swathes of foreign policy surrounding free trade are rendered redundant. Fuelling the unification are new crypto currencies that make currency transaction fees a thing of the past.

It is not the first time in world history that trans-national bodies and businesses supersede the power of the nation state. The East India Company on the 18th and 19th century, and its Dutch counterpart, rendered their national governments as toothless as Facebook and Google do Congress today.

The Local Place

The nation state is not dead. As one aspect of our lives globalises, another localises. The centre and majority of most lives no longer centre on a workspace, but instead return to the household. On the very local level very little changes. The farmer who takes his produce to market may now use an electric vehicle, but the road to market, and the produce sold is unchanged from Saxon times. A factory worker may still work in a factory, but now as overseer and quality controller. As Gordon Russell once put it, the trouble with machines is you must teach them some manners.

As we spend more time at home the value we invest in our spaces sky rockets: craftsmen and custom items become ever more are valued and, fuelled by this global economy, local shops and creators can thrive.

When the world is so open, we must needs define our area within that great plain. So as economy and culture on one end homogenise, so too does the definition of national identities. The world is too big, and we all need our place and our defined difference. That intangible something that unites the imagined community.

Imagine

The farmers wife of these Welsh valleys may sort the flock, kiss her husband and then step into the next room to ‘enter’ work: an entirely virtual office world with her Kigali-based best friend at the desk next door. They have never met in person. The husband spends the day with sheepdogs and shearing, the wife in cyberspace. In the evening they go to their sons music concert, and she must leave her tablet at home because she promised her son a global crisis would not make her miss this one as well. The tablet is left but the phone keeps buzzing. She misses the second half because of a crisis on the Japanese stock market. She tells herself it doesn’t matter: everything is recorded nowadays. But it does matter. The subtle truth of the importance of human presence is a shadow that no one dares acknowledge. For those working in cyberspace it is a struggle each night to pull their consciousness to those waiting in the local world. The struggle gets harder.

When balanced the global world supports local life, when off-kilter isolation and malcontent flourish. Both systems need both. A paradox? But of course.
